He was among the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Ubayd bin Khalid al-Sulami reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ established a bond of brotherhood between two men. One of them was killed, and the other died afterward. We performed the funeral prayer over him, and the Prophet ﷺ asked, "What did you say?"They replied, "We supplicated for him, saying, 'Allah, forgive him. Allah, have mercy on him. Allah, join him with his companion.'"The Prophet ﷺ said, "What of his prayers performed after his companion's prayers? What of his deeds performed after his companion's deeds? The difference between them is as vast as the distance between the heavens and the earth."Amr bin Maymun said, "This pleased me because it was reported to me with a connected chain."
[Its chain is hasan] Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Jihad, chapter on the light seen at the grave of the martyr, no. 2524, from the hadith of Shubah with this chain, and it is also found in al-Kubra, no. 2112. This hadith has many corroborating reports.Tahawi said in Mushkil Athar 30/102-103,The two Emigrants mentioned in the reports we have related emigrated to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ together, and were thus equal in that respect. They stayed with him, giving of themselves in whatever he directed them toward, whether jihad or any of the other matters through which one draws near to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. The one of them who was killed was engaged in jihad, to the point that it was said of him that his being so engaged came only through the Messenger of Allah ﷺ directing him to it. It may be that his companion had been with him and was equal to him in that, while the other exceeded him with the martyrdom for which he too had given his life in the same way. He was thereby, in that sense, akin to a martyr, even though the actual martyr surpasses him in what befell him of being killed, since he gave his life for it.Then the survivor lived on after him for a year from the time of his emigration to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, possessing that same virtue, and so he came to surpass his companion in this respect. During that time he performed his prayers throughout that whole period, fasted the Ramadan that passed over him, and likewise gave charity from his wealth. So there is no reason to deny that he may have exceeded his companion in rank, in the reward due to him, and in deserving to precede him into Paradise.Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said concerning one who is less than his like... and so on.
