One of the daughters of the Prophet ﷺ passed away, and he sent for us and said, "Wash her with water and lotus leaves, and wash her an odd number of times, three, five, or seven, if you see fit. Add some camphor to the final wash. When you have finished, let me know."When we finished, we informed him, and he handed us his waist-wrapper and said, "Place this against her body as her innermost shroud."We combed her hair into three braids and laid them behind her back.
أخبرنا عمرو بن علي قال حدثنا يحيى قال حدثنا هشام قال حدثتنا حفصة
ماتت إحدى بنات النبي ﷺ فأرسل إلينا فقال اغسلنها بماء وسدر واغسلنها وترا ثلاثا أو خمسا أو سبعا إن رأيتن ذلك واجعلن في الآخرة شيئا من كافور فإذا فرغتن فآذنني فلما فرغنا آذناه فألقى إلينا حقوه وقال أشعرنها إياه ومشطناها ثلاثة قرون وألقيناها من خلفها
Bukhari narrated it in "Funerals," chapter "The woman's hair is laid behind her," Hadith 1263, from the report of Qattan, and Muslim narrated it in "Funerals," chapter "On washing the deceased," Hadith 41/939, from the report of Hisham bin Hassan, from Yahya, through him. It is also found in al-Kubra, Hadith 2012.
