He set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the year of Khaybar. When they reached as-Sahba, which is near Khaybar, he prayed the afternoon prayer, then called for the provisions. Nothing was brought except parched barley flour, so he ordered it to be moistened with water. He ate, and we ate with him. Then he rose for the sunset prayer, rinsed his mouth, and we rinsed our mouths as well. Then he prayed without performing ablution.
[Its isnad is sahih]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the book of Tuhur (Purification), in the chapter on foregoing wudu after eating something touched by fire, hadith no. 192, from the hadith of Ali bin Ayyash, by this route. It is also found in al-Kubra, hadith no. 188, and Ibn Khuzayma, Ibn Hibban, and others graded it sahih.
