A man from the desert people asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the night prayer. He replied, "Two by two, and the witr is a single rakah at the end of the night."
أخبرنا الحسن بن محمد عن عفان قال حدثنا همام قال حدثنا قتادة عن عبد الله بن شقيق
أن رجلا من أهل البادية سأل رسول الله ﷺ عن صلاة الليل قال مثنى مثنى والوتر ركعة من آخر الليل
Reported by Muslim, no. 148/749 (see the previous two hadiths from the report of Abdullah bin Shaqiq), and by Abu Dawud, no. 1421, from the report of Hammam bin Yahya with the same wording, and it is in Kubra, no. 1398.
