The Prophet ﷺ came knocking at his door and Fatimah's one night and said, "Will you not pray?"I replied, "Messenger of Allah, our souls are in the hand of Allah. When He wishes to rouse us, He rouses us."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away when I said that, then I heard him as he was leaving striking his thigh and saying, "But man is, more than anything, contentious" [Kahf 18:54].
أخبرنا قتيبة قال حدثنا الليث عن عقيل عن الزهري عن علي بن حسين أن الحسين بن علي حدثه
أن النبي ﷺ طرقه وفاطمة فقال ألا تصلون قلت يا رسول الله إنما أنفسنا بيد الله فإذا شاء أن يبعثها بعثها فانصرف رسول الله ﷺ حين قلت له ذلك ثم سمعته وهو مدبر يضرب فخذه ويقول {وكان الإنسان أكثر شيء جدلا}
It was narrated by Muslim in the book of the Prayer of Travelers, chapter on encouraging night prayer even if little, hadith no. 775... and so on, hadith no. 1127, from Qutayba. Bukhari narrated it in the book of tahajjud, chapter on the Prophet's ﷺ encouragement to stand in night prayer, the hadith of Zuhri, through this same chain, and it is also found in Kubra, hadith no. 1311.
