A garment was being discussed, and someone said, "Messenger of Allah, why don't you buy this and wear it on Fridays and when delegations come to visit you?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Only one who has no share in the Hereafter wears such a garment."Later, similar garments were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave one of them to Umar. Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, you have given this to me to wear, yet you said about Utarid's garment what you said?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I did not give it to you so that you would wear it."So Umar sent it to a polytheist brother of his in Mecca.
أخبرنا قتيبة عن مالك عن نافع عن عبد الله بن عمر أن
حلة فقال يا رسول الله لو اشتريت هذه فلبستها يوم الجمعة وللوفد إذا قدموا عليك قال رسول الله ﷺ إنما يلبس هذه من لا خلاق له في الآخرة ثم جاء رسول الله ﷺ مثلها فأعطى عمر منها حلة فقال عمر يا رسول الله كسوتنيها وقد قلت في حلة عطارد ما قلت قال رسول الله ﷺ لم أكسكها لتلبسها فكساها عمر أخا له مشركا بمكة
Bukhari transmitted it in the chapter on Friday, "Wearing the best clothing one can find," hadith no. 886, and Muslim in the chapter on clothing, "The prohibition of wearing silk and the like for men," hadith no. 2068, from the hadith of Malik through this same chain. It is also found in Muwatta (Yahya) 1/917, 918, and in Kubra, hadith no. 1686.
