The people used to live in the outskirts of Madinah and would come to the Friday prayer with dirt on them. When the breeze touched them, their odor would rise and trouble the others. This was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Why don't they bathe?"
أخبرنا محمود بن خالد عن الوليد قال حدثنا عبد الله بن العلاء أنه سمع القاسم بن محمد بن أبي بكر أنهم ذكروا غسل يوم الجمعة عند
إنما كان الناس يسكنون العالية فيحضرون الجمعة وبهم وسخ فإذا أصابهم الروح سطعت أرواحهم فيتأذى بها الناس فذكر ذلك لرسول الله ﷺ فقال أو لا يغتسلون

Its isnad is sahih. Tabarani narrated it in Musnad Shamiyin (1/438, no. 772) from the hadith of Walid bin Muslim, through this route, and it is also in Al-Kubra, no. 1683. Shababa bin Sawwar and others also narrated it from Abdullah bin Ala bin Zabr, through this route, and it has many other paths in Bukhari, no. 902, and Muslim, no. 847, and others besides them.
