My own eyes saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with traces of water and mud on his forehead and nose on the morning of the twenty-first night. Abridged.
أخبرنا محمد بن سلمة والحارث بن مسكين قراءة عليه وأنا أسمع واللفظ له عن ابن القاسم قال حدثني مالك عن يزيد بن عبد الله بن الهاد عن محمد بن إبراهيم بن الحارث عن أبي سلمة
بصرت عيناي رسول الله ﷺ على جبينه وأنفه أثر الماء والطين من صبح ليلة إحدى وعشرين مختصر
Bukhari narrated it in Itikaf, chapter on itikaf during the last ten nights, hadith no. 2027, from the hadith of Malik. Muslim narrated it in Siyam, chapter on the merit of Laylat al-Qadr and the encouragement to seek it, etc., hadith no. 1167/214, from the hadith of Yazid bin Abdullah, with the same chain. It is also found in Kubra, hadith no. 682, and in Muwatta (the version of Ibn Qasim, hadith no. 516, and the version of Yahya bin Yahya, 1/319, in full).
