Abdullah bin Masud reported,

Regarding His statement , "Those whom they invoke themselves seek means of access to their Lord, which of them is nearest" [Isra 17:57], he said, "There was a group of jinn who had embraced Islam, but people continued to worship them. So those who used to worship them remained upon their worship, while the group of jinn had already embraced Islam."
