It was said to him, "Will you not go in to Uthman and speak with him?"He replied, "Do you think I do not speak to him unless you hear it? By Allah, I have indeed spoken with him privately, between him and me, without opening a matter that I would not wish to be the first to open. Nor will I say of any man who is appointed as a ruler over me that he is the best of people, after I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'On the Day of Resurrection, a man will be brought and cast into the Fire. His intestines will spill out, and he will circle around with them as a donkey circles around a millstone. The people of the Fire will gather around him and ask, "So-and-so, what is wrong with you? Did you not used to command good and forbid evil?" He will reply, "Yes, I used to command good but not do it, and forbid evil but do it myself."'"
حدثنا يحيى بن يحيى وأبو بكر بن أبي شيبة ومحمد بن عبد الله بن نمير وإسحق بن إبراهيم وأبو كريب واللفظ لأبي كريب قال يحيى وإسحق أخبرنا و قال الآخرون حدثنا أبو معاوية حدثنا الأعمش عن شقيق
قيل له ألا تدخل على عثمان فتكلمه فقال أترون أني لا أكلمه إلا أسمعكم والله لقد كلمته فيما بيني وبينه ما دون أن أفتتح أمرا لا أحب أن أكون أول من فتحه ولا أقول لأحد يكون علي أميرا إنه خير الناس بعد ما سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول يؤتى بالرجل يوم القيامة فيلقى في النار فتندلق أقتاب بطنه فيدور بها كما يدور الحمار بالرحى فيجتمع إليه أهل النار فيقولون يا فلان ما لك ألم تكن تأمر بالمعروف وتنهى عن المنكر فيقول بلى قد كنت آمر بالمعروف ولا آتيه وأنهى عن المنكر وآتيه
