The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu Ubayda bin Jarrah to Bahrain to bring back its tribute. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself had concluded the peace agreement with the people of Bahrain and had appointed Ala bin Hadrami as their governor. Abu Ubayda arrived with the wealth from Bahrain, and when the Ansar heard of his arrival, they gathered for the dawn prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the prayer and turned to leave, they presented themselves before him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled when he saw them and said, "I think you have heard that Abu Ubayda has arrived with something from Bahrain."They replied, "Yes indeed, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Then receive good news and hope for what will please you. By Allah, it is not poverty that I fear for you. What I fear for you is that the world will be spread out before you as it was spread out before those who came before you, and that you will compete for it as they competed for it, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them."
حدثني حرملة بن يحيى بن عبد الله يعني ابن حرملة بن عمران التجيبي أخبرنا ابن وهب أخبرني يونس عن ابن شهاب عن عروة بن الزبير أن المسور بن مخرمة
أن رسول الله ﷺ بعث أبا عبيدة بن الجراح إلى البحرين يأتي بجزيتها وكان رسول الله ﷺ هو صالح أهل البحرين وأمر عليهم العلاء بن الحضرمي فقدم أبو عبيدة بمال من البحرين فسمعت الأنصار بقدوم أبي عبيدة فوافوا صلاة الفجر مع رسول الله ﷺ فلما صلى رسول الله ﷺ انصرف فتعرضوا له فتبسم رسول الله ﷺ حين رآهم ثم قال أظنكم سمعتم أن أبا عبيدة قدم بشيء من البحرين فقالوا أجل يا رسول الله قال فأبشروا وأملوا ما يسركم فوالله ما الفقر أخشى عليكم ولكني أخشى عليكم أن تبسط الدنيا عليكم كما بسطت على من كان قبلكم فتنافسوها كما تنافسوها وتهلككم كما أهلكتهم
