A red wind blew over Kufa, and a man came whose only refrain was, "Abdullah bin Masud, the Hour has come!"He was reclining, so he sat up and said, "The Hour will not arrive until inheritance is no longer divided and people no longer rejoice over spoils." Then he gestured with his hand like this, pointing toward Sham, and said, "An enemy will gather against the people of Islam, and the people of Islam will gather against them."I asked, "Do you mean the Romans?"He said, "Yes. At that battle there will be a fierce retreat. The Muslims will appoint a death squad that will not return except victorious. There will be such slaughter as has never been seen," or he said, "the like of which has not been seen," so much so that a bird flying past their flanks will not pass beyond them before dropping dead.A family of brothers numbering a hundred will count themselves and find that only one of them remains. So over what spoils will anyone rejoice, and what inheritance will be divided?While they are in that state, they will hear of a calamity greater than that, and a crier will reach them announcing that Dajjal has come upon their families behind them. They will throw down what is in their hands and turn back, sending ten horsemen ahead as a scouting party.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I know their names, the names of their fathers, and the colors of their horses. They are the best horsemen on the face of the earth that day," or "among the best horsemen on the face of the earth that day."Ibn Abu Shayba mentioned this in his narration from Asir bin Jabir.
