When news of the Prophet's ﷺ mission in Mecca reached Abu Dharr, he said to his brother, "Travel to that valley and bring me information about this man who claims that revelation comes to him from the heavens. Listen to what he says, then return to me."His brother set out and arrived in Mecca, where he listened to the Prophet's words, then returned to Abu Dharr and said, "I saw him commanding noble character, and his speech is not poetry."Abu Dharr replied, "You have not satisfied what I wanted to know."So he prepared provisions, carried a waterskin filled with water, and traveled until he reached Mecca. He went to the sacred mosque and searched for the Prophet ﷺ, though he did not know him by sight, and he was reluctant to ask about him. Night came upon him, and he lay down. Ali saw him and recognized that he was a stranger. When Ali noticed him, Abu Dharr followed him, but neither asked the other anything until morning came. Then Abu Dharr carried his waterskin and provisions back to the mosque and spent that day there without seeing the Prophet ﷺ until evening. He returned to his sleeping place, and Ali passed by him and said, "Has the time not come for the man to know where he is staying?" Ali had him get up and took him along with him, yet neither asked the other anything. When the third day came, the same thing happened, and Ali had him stay with him again. Then Ali said to him, "Will you not tell me what brought you to this town?"Abu Dharr said, "If you give me a solemn pledge that you will guide me rightly, I will tell you."Ali gave him the pledge, and Abu Dharr informed him of his purpose.Ali said, "It is indeed the truth, and he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When morning comes, follow me. If I see something I fear for you, I will stop as though I am pouring out water. If I continue, follow me until you enter where I enter."Abu Dharr did so. He walked behind Ali until Ali entered upon the Prophet ﷺ, and Abu Dharr entered with him. He listened to the Prophet's words and accepted Islam on the spot. The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Return to your people and inform them, until my command reaches you."Abu Dharr said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, I will proclaim it openly among them."He went out until he came to the sacred mosque and called out at the top of his voice, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."The people rose up and beat him until they knocked him to the ground. Abbas came and threw himself over him, saying, "Woe to you! Do you not know that he is from Ghifar, and that the route of your trade caravans to Syria passes through their territory?" And so he rescued him from them. The next day Abu Dharr did the same thing again, and they rose against him and beat him. Abbas threw himself over him and rescued him once more.
