The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed behind, and I stayed behind with him. When he had relieved himself, he asked, "Do you have water with you?"I brought him a water vessel. He washed his hands and his face, then began to roll up his sleeves, but the sleeve of his cloak was too narrow. So he pulled his arm out from beneath the cloak and let it fall onto his shoulders, then washed his forearms, wiped over his forelock and over his turban and over his leather socks. Then he mounted, and I mounted, and we caught up with the people, who had already begun the prayer with Abdul-Rahman bin Awf leading them. He had completed one rakah with them. When he sensed the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, he started to step back, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him to continue, so he led them in prayer. When he gave the salam, the Prophet ﷺ stood up and I stood with him, and we performed the rakah that we had missed.

Muslim also reported it from Ibn Nafi, from Yazid bin Zuray, from Humayd, from Bakr, from Urwa bin Mughira, from his father, the story of wiping. He said, this is how Ibn Nafi related it, but others differed from him regarding Yazid, and reported it from him correctly as being from Hamza bin Mughira. Humayd bin Masada and Amr bin Ali reported it from Yazid bin Zuray correctly, and likewise Ibn Adi related it from Humayd.
