Jabala bin Suhaym reported,

Ibn Zubayr used to provide us with dates as our ration. The narrator said, "People were suffering hardship at that time, and we would eat. Ibn Umar would pass by us while we were eating and say, 'Do not take two dates at once, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade taking two at a time unless a man first asks permission of his companion.'"Shuba remarked, "I think this last phrase, about asking permission, is only from the words of Ibn Umar himself."Neither Shuba's remark nor the statement that people were suffering hardship at that time appears in the version narrated by the other two.
