Jabala bin Suhaym reported,

Ibn Zubayr used to give us dates as our ration. The people at that time were suffering hardship, and we would be eating when Ibn Umar would pass by us as we ate. He would say, "Do not pair dates together when eating, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade pairing them unless a man seeks permission from his companion."Shuba said, "I think this phrase, meaning seeking permission, is only from the words of Ibn Umar himself."
