I heard Abdullah bin Abu Awfa say, "Famine struck us during the nights of Khaybar. On the day of Khaybar, we came upon some domesticated donkeys, so we slaughtered them. When the cooking pots were boiling with their meat, the announcer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out that we should overturn the pots and not eat any of the donkey meat."He said, "Some people said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade it only because the fifth share had not yet been taken from the spoils, while others said he forbade it absolutely."

سمعت عبد الله بن أبي أوفى يقولا أصابتنا مجاعة ليالي خيبر فلما كان يوم خيبر وقعنا في الحمر الأهلية فانتحرناها فلما غلت بها القدور نادى منادي رسول الله ﷺ أن اكفئوا القدور ولا تأكلوا من لحوم الحمر شيئا قال فقال ناس إنما نهى عنها رسول الله ﷺ لأنها لم تخمس وقال آخرون نهى عنها ألبتة
