I asked Abdullah bin Abu Awfa about the meat of domestic donkeys.He said, "We were struck by famine on the day of Khaybar while we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We had captured some donkeys from the people that had wandered out of the town, so we slaughtered them. Our pots were boiling when the announcer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out, 'Turn over the pots and do not eat any of the donkey meat.'"I asked, "Did he forbid them as a permanent prohibition?"He replied, "We discussed this among ourselves and concluded that he forbade them outright, and that he forbade them because the fifth had not been taken from them as spoils."
