The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed a man from the Azd tribe, known as Ibn al-Utbiyyah, to collect the alms from Banu Sulaym. When he returned, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him to account. The man said, "This is what belongs to you, and this is a gift given to me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Why did you not sit in the house of your father and mother and wait to see if your gift would come to you, if you are truthful?"Then he addressed us. He praised Allah and glorified Him, then said, "To proceed. I appoint a man from among you to a task that Allah has entrusted to me, and he comes back saying, 'This is what belongs to you, and this was given to me as a gift.' Why did he not sit in the house of his father and mother and wait to see if his gift would come to him, if he is truthful? By Allah, none of you takes anything from these alms unjustly without meeting Allah on the Day of Resurrection carrying it. I shall surely recognize any one of you who meets Allah carrying a camel that grunts, or a cow that lows, or a sheep that bleats."Then he raised his hands until the whiteness of his armpits could be seen, and said, "O Allah, have I conveyed the message?" before the sight of my eyes and the hearing of my ears.
