I wrote to Nafi asking him about calling people to Islam before fighting them. He wrote back to me that this was only required in the early days of Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raided the tribe of Banu Mustaliq while they were unaware, with their livestock being watered at the wells. He killed their fighting men and took their dependents captive, and on that day he took as a captive, Yahya said, I believe he said, Juwayriyyah, or he said definitively, the daughter of Harith.Abdullah bin Umar narrated this hadith to me, and he had been part of that army.
