Zuhri reported,

He said, Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba informed me that he heard Abdullah bin Abbas say that Umar bin Khattab, while seated on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, declared, "Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ with the truth and revealed the Book to him. Among what was revealed to him was the verse of stoning. We recited it, we committed it to memory, and we understood it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ carried out stoning, and we carried it out after him. But I fear that as time passes, someone will say, 'We do not find stoning in the Book of Allah,' and so they will go astray by abandoning an obligation that Allah revealed. Stoning in the Book of Allah is indeed the due penalty for anyone who commits adultery, man or woman, if that person has been married, provided clear evidence is established, or there is pregnancy, or there is a confession."
