On that day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat upon his camel while a man held its halter, and he asked, "Do you know what day this is?"We replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best."We thought he was going to give it a name other than its own. Then he said, "Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?"We said, "Yes indeed, Messenger of Allah."He asked, "And which month is this?"We replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He said, "Is it not Dhul-Hijjah?"We said, "Yes indeed, Messenger of Allah."He asked, "And which land is this?"We replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best."Again we thought he was going to give it a name other than its own. Then he said, "Is it not the Sacred City?"We said, "Yes indeed, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Your blood, your wealth, and your honor are sacred to one another, just as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Let the one present convey this to the one absent."Then he turned to two horned rams of mixed black and white color and slaughtered them, and to a small flock of sheep, which he divided among us.
Muslim also recorded, through the narrations of Yazid bin Zuray and Hammad bin Masada, from Ibn Awn, from Muhammad, from Ibn Abu Bakra, from his father, regarding the sermon on the day of sacrifice, and at the end of it, "Then he turned to two piebald rams and slaughtered them, and to a small flock of sheep and divided it among us."This statement is, as it is said, an error on the part of Ibn Awn. It was actually Ibn Sirin who narrated it from Anas, as Ayub reported it from him. Bukhari recorded Ibn Awn's hadith but did not include this statement in it, cutting it off, perhaps because it had become clear to him that it was an error, and Allah knows best. Muslim, however, included it in full.
