We were with Umar when he asked, "Which of you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention the trials?"Some people said, "We heard him."Umar said, "Perhaps you mean the trial a man faces with his family and his neighbor?"They said, "Yes."He said, "Those are expiated by prayer, fasting, and charity. But which of you heard the Prophet ﷺ mention the trials that surge like the waves of the sea?"Hudhayfah said, The people fell silent, so I said, "I did."Umar said, "You? May your father be honored before Allah."Hudhayfah said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Trials are presented to hearts like a reed mat woven stick by stick. Any heart that absorbs them has a black mark placed upon it, and any heart that rejects them has a white mark placed upon it, until hearts become of two kinds. One is white like a smooth stone, which no trial can harm as long as the heavens and the earth endure. The other is black and ash-colored like an overturned jug, recognizing nothing as good and rejecting nothing as evil, except what its own desires have absorbed."Hudhayfah said, And I told him that between you and those trials is a closed door that is about to be broken.Umar asked, "Will it be broken? May you have no father!" Had it been opened, perhaps it could have been closed again.I said, "No, it will be broken."And I told him that the door is a man who will be killed or die. This was a report without confusion.Abu Khalid said, I asked Saad, "Abu Malik, what does 'black and ash-colored' mean?"He said, "Intense whiteness within blackness."I asked, "And what does 'an overturned jug' mean?"He said, "Turned upside down."

كنا عند عمر فقال أيكم سمع رسول الله ﷺ يذكر الفتن فقال قوم نحن سمعناه فقال لعلكم تعنون فتنة الرجل في أهله وجاره قالوا أجل قال تلك تكفرها الصلاة والصيام والصدقة ولكن أيكم سمع النبي ﷺ يذكر الفتن التي تموج موج البحر قال حذيفة فأسكت القوم فقلت أنا قال أنت لله أبوك قال حذيفة سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول تعرض الفتن على القلوب كالحصير عودا عودا فأي قلب أشربها نكت فيه نكتة سوداء وأي قلب أنكرها نكت فيه نكتة بيضاء حتى تصير على قلبين على أبيض مثل الصفا فلا تضره فتنة ما دامت السماوات والأرض والآخر أسود مربادا كالكوز مجخيا لا يعرف معروفا ولا ينكر منكرا إلا ما أشرب من هواه قال حذيفة وحدثته أن بينك وبينها بابا مغلقا يوشك أن يكسر قال عمر أكسرا لا أبا لك فلو أنه فتح لعله كان يعاد قلت لا بل يكسر وحدثته أن ذلك الباب رجل يقتل أو يموت حديثا ليس بالأغاليط قال أبو خالد فقلت لسعد يا أبا مالك ما أسود مربادا قال شدة البياض في سواد قال قلت فما الكوز مجخيا قال منكوسا
