Abu Tufayl reported,

I said to Ibn Abbas, "Tell me about this jogging around the House for three circuits and walking for four. Is it the Prophet's practice? Your people claim that it is."He replied, "They are right and they are wrong."I asked, "What do you mean, they are right and they are wrong?"He explained, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Makkah, the polytheists said, 'Muhammad and his companions are too emaciated to make the rounds of the House.' They envied him. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered them to jog for three circuits and walk for four."Then I said to him, "Tell me about performing the tawaf between Safa and Marwa while riding. Is that the Prophet's practice? Your people claim that it is."He replied, "They are right and they are wrong."I asked, "And what do you mean, they are right and they are wrong?"He said, "The people crowded around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying, 'This is Muhammad, this is Muhammad,' until even the young girls came out of their houses. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not one to have people driven away before him, so when the crowd pressed in on him, he rode. But walking and hastening are better."He also said, "The people of Makkah were an envious lot," and he did not say, "they envied him."
