I said to Ibn Abbas, "Tell me about this jogging during three circuits around the House and walking during four circuits. Is it Sunnah? For your people claim that it is Sunnah."He replied, "They have spoken truthfully and they have spoken falsely."I asked, "What do you mean by 'they have spoken truthfully and they have spoken falsely'?"He said, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Mecca, the polytheists said, 'Muhammad and his companions are too weak to circle the House because of their emaciation.' They were envious of him. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded them to jog during three circuits and walk during four."I then said to him, "Tell me about performing the circuits between Safa and Marwa while riding. Is it Sunnah? For your people claim that it is Sunnah."He replied, "They have spoken truthfully and they have spoken falsely."I asked, "What do you mean by 'they have spoken truthfully and they have spoken falsely'?"He said, "The crowd pressed upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying, 'This is Muhammad, this is Muhammad,' until even the young women came out of their homes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not have people struck aside before him, so when the crowd grew too dense around him, he rode. But walking and brisk pacing are better."
