Abu Qatada reported,

He was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until, on a stretch of the road to Mecca, he stayed behind with some companions of his who were in a state of ihram, while he himself was not in ihram. He spotted a wild donkey, mounted his horse, and asked his companions to hand him his whip, but they refused. He then asked them for his spear, but they refused that too. So he took it himself, charged at the donkey, and killed it.Some of the Prophet's ﷺ companions ate from it while others refused. When they caught up with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they asked him about it, and he said, "It is simply food that Allah has provided for you to eat."
