Rabia bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib and Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib reported,

It was said to Abdul-Muttalib bin Rabia and to Fadl bin Abbas, "Go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and speak to him, so that he may put you in charge of some of these charity collections. Then you can hand over what the people hand over and receive what the people receive."While the two of them were discussing this, Ali bin Abu Talib came along and stopped beside them, and they told him what they intended.Ali bin Abu Talib said, "Do not do it. By Allah, he will not do such a thing."Rabia bin Harith turned on him and said, "By Allah, you are only doing this out of jealousy toward us. By Allah, you obtained the honor of marrying into the family of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we felt no jealousy toward you over it."Ali said, "Send the two of them, then." So they set off, and Ali lay down.Fadl continued, When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had prayed Dhuhr, we hurried ahead of him to the chamber and stood there until he came. He took hold of our ears and said, "Out with whatever it is you are keeping to yourselves."Then he went in, and we went in with him. That day he was staying with Zaynab bint Jahsh. Each of us left the talking to the other, and then one of us spoke up and said, "Messenger of Allah, you are the most dutiful of people and the most attentive to family ties. We have reached the age of marriage, so we have come so that you might appoint us over some of these charity collections. We will hand over to you what the people hand over, and receive what they receive."He remained silent for a long while, until we wanted to speak to him again. Meanwhile Zaynab was signaling to us from behind the curtain not to speak to him. Then he said, "Charity is not fitting for the family of Muhammad. It is nothing but the impurities that people wash from their wealth. Call Mahmiya for me," and Mahmiya was in charge of the fifth, "and Nawfal bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib."The two of them came, and he said to Mahmiya, "Marry your daughter to this young man," meaning Fadl bin Abbas. So he married her to him.And he said to Nawfal bin Harith, "Marry your daughter to this young man," meaning me. So he married her to me.Then he said to Mahmiya, "Pay their bridal gifts from the fifth, such and such an amount."Zuhri said, "He did not name the amount to me."In another version of this report it says, Ali threw down his cloak, lay upon it, and said, "I am Abu Hasan, the chief. By Allah, I will not budge from my place until your two sons come back to you with a disappointing answer to the errand you sent them on to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."And in this version of the report it says, Then he said to us, "These charity collections are nothing but the impurities that people wash from their wealth. They are not lawful for Muhammad, nor for the family of Muhammad."It also says, Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Call Mahmiya bin Jaz for me." He was a man of Banu Asad whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had put in charge of the fifths.
