Rabia bin Harith and Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib got together and said, "By Allah, we should send these two boys," meaning myself and Fadl bin Abbas, "to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to speak with him, so that he might put them in charge of these charity collections. They would then hand over what other people hand over and receive a share like the share others receive."While they were discussing this, Ali bin Abu Talib came along and stopped beside them, and they mentioned the matter to him.Ali bin Abu Talib said, "Do not do it. By Allah, he will not do such a thing."Rabia bin Harith turned on him and said, "By Allah, you are only doing this out of envy toward us. By Allah, you obtained the honor of marrying into the family of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we never envied you for it."Ali said, "Send the two of them, then."So we set off, and Ali lay down. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had prayed Dhuhr, we hurried ahead of him to the chamber and stood there until he came. He took us both by the ears and said, "Out with whatever you two are hiding."Then he went in and we went in with him. That day he was staying with Zaynab bint Jahsh. Each of us urged the other to speak, and then one of us said, "Messenger of Allah, you are the most righteous of people and the most attentive to family ties. We have reached the age of marriage, and we have come so that you might put us in charge of some of these charity collections. We would hand over to you what other people hand over and receive a share as they do."He remained silent for a long while, so long that we wanted to speak to him again. Zaynab kept signaling to us from behind the curtain not to speak to him. Then he said, "Charity is not fitting for the family of Muhammad. It is only the impurities that people wash off. Call Muhmiyah for me," and he was in charge of the fifth, "and Nawfal bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib."The two of them came to him, and he said to Muhmiyah, "Marry your daughter to this young man," meaning Fadl bin Abbas, and he married her to him. Then he said to Nawfal bin Harith, "Marry your daughter to this young man," meaning me, and he married her to me.Then he said to Muhmiyah, "Pay their bridal gifts out of the fifth, such and such an amount."Zuhri said, "He did not name the amount to me."
Muslim narrated the long hadith of Abdul-Muttalib bin Rabia from the report of Malik and Yunus, both from Zuhri, though they differed. Malik said, from Zuhri, from Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Harith bin Nawfal, while Yunus said, from Zuhri, from Abdullah bin Harith. (And Hushaym narrated it from Ibn Ishaq, from Zuhri, from Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Harith.)
I say, what Imam Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, said is plausible, and it is also plausible that Imam Zuhri transmitted the hadith from Abdullah bin Abdullah as a mursal narration, because tadlis requires that the narrator have actually heard from the shaykh from whom he is practicing tadlis. He narrated it from his father, as evidenced by the fact that he explicitly stated "haddathani" in Malik's narration but did not state it explicitly in Yunus's narration. This is supported by what is in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, where it says that Ajurri said, "I asked Abu Dawud, 'Did Zuhri hear from Abdullah bin Harith?'" He said, "No, he heard from his sons." Hafiz Alai mentioned this in Jami Tahsil, volume 2, page 654, saying, Abu Abdullah Ajurri said, "I asked Abu Dawud, 'Did Zuhri hear from Abdullah bin Harith?'" He said, "No, he heard from his two sons, Abdullah bin Harith and Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Harith." Then Alai said, "I say, his narration from their father, Abdullah bin Harith, is found in Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Nasai." End of quote. After all this, what the heart settles upon is what Daraqutni said, because Malik was more precise in memory and more eminent than Yunus, and because Zuhri practiced tadlis and did not explicitly state "haddathani" in Yunus's narration. And Allah knows best. As for Muslim, may Allah have mercy on him, his excuse is that he mentioned it among the corroborating narrations, and perhaps he mentioned it in order to point out its underlying defect. And Allah knows best.
