We used to give the zakat al-fitr while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was among us, on behalf of every young and old, free and slave, from three categories: a sa of dates, a sa of dried yogurt, or a sa of barley. We continued to give it that way until the time of Muawiya, who held the view that two mudds of wheat were equivalent to a sa of dates.Abu Saeed said, "As for me, I will continue to give it as we used to."
Muslim narrated it via the route of Iyad from Abu Saeed regarding zakat al-fitr, from Muhammad bin Rafi, from Abdul-Razzaq, from Mamar, from Ismail bin Umaya, from Iyad, from Abu Saeed. He said Saeed bin Salama Sadafi contradicted him, narrating from Ismail bin Umaya, from Harith bin Abu Dhubab, from Iyad. The hadith is preserved as coming from Harith, and it was also narrated from him by Ibn Jurayj and others. And from Ismail bin Umaya, from Maqburi, from Iyad, from Abu Saeed, comes "The thing I fear most for you is the allure of this world." We do not know of Ismail narrating anything from Iyad.
I say, it has been established in Sahih Muslim that Ismail explicitly stated that his teacher Iyad informed him, and there is nothing that would prevent this, for both were from Makkah. Iyad died around the year one hundred, as stated in Taqrib, and Ismail died in the year 144, though it is also said 139, as stated in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib. Ismail was not mentioned as one who practiced tadlis. And Allah knows best.
