It is reported that a man came to Ibn Masud and said, "I recited the entire Mufassal portion in a single rakah tonight."Abdullah replied, "That is reciting as hastily as one rattles off poetry."Abdullah then said, "I know well the comparable surahs that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pair together." He then mentioned twenty surahs from the Mufassal, paired two by two, one pair in each rakah.
حدثنا محمد بن المثنى وابن بشار قال ابن المثنى حدثنا محمد بن جعفر حدثنا شعبة عن عمرو بن مرة أنه سمع
يحدث أن رجلا جاء إلى ابن مسعود فقال إني قرأت المفصل الليلة كله في ركعة فقال عبد الله هذا كهذ الشعر فقال عبد الله لقد عرفت النظائر التي كان رسول الله ﷺ يقرن بينهن قال فذكر عشرين سورة من المفصل سورتين سورتين في كل ركعة
