A man named Nuhayk bin Sinan came to Abdullah and said, "Abu Abdul-Rahman, how do you recite this word? Do you find it with an alif or a ya, 'of water unstaling' [Muhammad 47:15]?"Abdullah replied, "Have you mastered the whole Quran apart from this one word?"The man said, "I recite the closing section of the Quran in a single rakat."Abdullah said, "So you rattle it off the way poetry is rattled off. There are people who recite the Quran and it never passes beyond their throats, but when it settles in the heart and takes firm root there, then it benefits. The best part of the prayer is the ruku and the sujud. I know well the matching surahs that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pair together, two surahs in each rakat."Then Abdullah got up and left, and Alqama followed him in. When Alqama came out he said, "He has told me what they are."In Ibn Numayr's version he said, "A man from the tribe of Bajila came to Abdullah," and he did not name Nuhayk bin Sinan.
حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة وابن نمير جميعا عن وكيع قال أبو بكر حدثنا وكيع عن الأعمش
جاء رجل يقال له نهيك بن سنان إلى عبد الله فقال يا أبا عبد الرحمن كيف تقرأ هذا الحرف ألفا تجده أم ياء {من ماء غير آسن} أو {من ماء غير ءاسن} قال فقال عبد الله وكل القرآن قد أحصيت غير هذا قال إني لأقرأ المفصل في ركعة فقال عبد الله هذا كهذ الشعر إن أقواما يقرءون القرآن لا يجاوز تراقيهم ولكن إذا وقع في القلب فرسخ فيه نفع إن أفضل الصلاة الركوع والسجود إني لأعلم النظائر التي كان رسول الله ﷺ يقرن بينهن سورتين في كل ركعة ثم قام عبد الله فدخل علقمة في إثره ثم خرج فقال قد أخبرني بها قال ابن نمير في روايته جاء رجل من بني بجيلة إلى عبد الله ولم يقل نهيك بن سنان
