Ubayy bin Kaab reported,

The Prophet ﷺ was at the pond of Banu Ghifar when Jibreel came to him and said, "Allah commands you to have your community recite the Quran according to one mode."The Prophet replied, "I ask Allah for His pardon and His forgiveness. My community cannot bear that."Jibreel came to him a second time and said, "Allah commands you to have your community recite the Quran according to two modes."He replied, "I ask Allah for His pardon and His forgiveness. My community cannot bear that."Jibreel came to him a third time and said, "Allah commands you to have your community recite the Quran according to three modes."He replied, "I ask Allah for His pardon and His forgiveness. My community cannot bear that."Then Jibreel came to him a fourth time and said, "Allah commands you to have your community recite the Quran according to seven modes. Whichever of these modes they recite by, they have recited correctly."
