An Arabi came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, guide me to a deed which, if I perform it, will admit me to Paradise."He said, "Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, establish the obligatory prayer, pay the obligatory zakat, and fast Ramadan."The man said, "By Him in whose hand is my soul, I will never add anything to this, nor will I diminish anything from it."When he turned away, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever wishes to look at a man from the people of Paradise, let him look at this one."
و حدثني أبو بكر بن إسحق حدثنا عفان حدثنا وهيب حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد عن أبي زرعة
أن أعرابيا جاء إلى رسول الله ﷺ فقال يا رسول الله دلني على عمل إذا عملته دخلت الجنة قال تعبد الله لا تشرك به شيئا وتقيم الصلاة المكتوبة وتؤدي الزكاة المفروضة وتصوم رمضان قال والذي نفسي بيده لا أزيد على هذا شيئا أبدا ولا أنقص منه فلما ولى قال النبي ﷺ من سره أن ينظر إلى رجل من أهل الجنة فلينظر إلى هذا
24. Both of them [al-Bukhari and Muslim] included the hadith of Affan, from Wahib, from Abu Hayan, from Abu Zura, from Abu Hurairah, that a man said to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, "Direct me to a deed which, if I do it, will make me enter Paradise." He said, "Worship Allah and do not associate any partner with Him."He said that Yahya Qattan narrated it as well, but he differed from Wahib. He narrated it from Ibn Hayan, from Abu Zura, as a mursal report, from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family.
The Hafiz, may Allah have mercy on him, said in the introduction, page 356, printed edition, after mentioning the words of Daraqutni, "Bukhari included the hadith of Yahya Qattan right after the hadith of Wahib, indicating that the defect is not a serious flaw, because Wahib was a reliable memorizer, so his narration was given precedence since it contains an addition. In the same vein as his narration is another hadith on which the two of them agreed, from this same route, in the Book of Faith, transmitted through Jareer and Ismail bin Ulaya from Abu Hayan, and this strengthens Wahib's narration. And Allah knows best." End of quote.
I say, the hadith to which the Hafiz referred was reported by Bukhari, may Allah have mercy on him, in the Book of Faith, in the chapter on Jibreel's questioning of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, about faith, Islam, and excellence, and so on. He, may Allah have mercy on him, said, Musaddad narrated to us, he said, Ismail bin Ibrahim narrated to us, he said, Abu Hayan informed us from Abu Zura from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it. Muslim also reported it, volume 1, page 161, along with Nawawi's commentary, from the hadith of Ibn Ulayyah, with the same chain.
