Umar bin Khattab sent him out as a collector of charity, and he would count the newborn lambs against the people. They said, "Do you count the newborn lambs against us and yet take nothing from them?"When he came to Umar bin Khattab, he mentioned this to him.Umar said, "Yes, you count the newborn lamb against them, the one the shepherd carries, but you do not take it. Nor do you take the sheep fattened for eating, nor the one nursing its young, nor the pregnant one, nor the breeding ram of the flock. You take the yearling and the two-year-old, for that is a fair balance between the young of the flock and the best of it."
حدثني يحيى عن مالك عن ثور بن زيد الديلي عن ابن لعبد الله بن سفيان الثقفي
أن عمر بن الخطاب بعثه مصدقا فكان يعد على الناس بالسخل فقالوا أتعد علينا بالسخل ولا تأخذ منه شيئا فلما قدم على عمر بن الخطاب ذكر له ذلك فقال عمر نعم تعد عليهم بالسخلة يحملها الراعي ولا تأخذها ولا تأخذ الأكولة ولا الربى ولا الماخض ولا فحل الغنم وتأخذ الجذعة والثنية وذلك عدل بين غذاء الغنم وخياره
