A wife of mine died, and Muhammad bin Kaab al-Qurazi came to console me over her. He said, "Among the Children of Israil there was a man who was a jurist, a scholar, devout and diligent in worship. He had a wife whom he greatly admired and dearly loved, and when she died he grieved for her so intensely and was so overcome with sorrow that he shut himself away in a room, locked himself in, and withdrew from people, so that no one could come in to him."A woman heard about him and came to his house and said, 'I have a need of him, a question I must ask him for a ruling, and nothing will satisfy me but speaking to him face to face.' The people left, but she stayed at his door and said, 'I cannot do without him.'"Someone said to him, 'There is a woman here who wants a ruling from you. She says she will accept nothing but speaking to you directly. The people have gone, and she will not leave the door.'"He said, 'Let her in.'"So she came in to him and said, 'I have come to ask you for a ruling on a matter.'"He asked, 'What is it?'"She said, 'I borrowed some jewelry from a neighbor of mine. I used to wear it and lend it out for a long while. Now they have sent to me asking for it. Should I give it back to them?'"He said, 'Yes, by Allah.'"She said, 'But it stayed with me a long time.'"He said, 'That makes it all the more right for you to return it to them, since they lent it to you for such a long time.'"She said, 'Then may Allah have mercy on you, do you grieve over something Allah lent to you and then took back from you, when He has more right to it than you do?'"At that he saw clearly the state he had been in, and Allah benefited him through her words."
و حدثني عن مالك عن يحيى بن سعيد
هلكت امرأة لي فأتاني محمد بن كعب القرظي يعزيني بها فقال إنه كان في بني إسرائيل رجل فقيه عالم عابد مجتهد وكانت له امرأة وكان بها معجبا ولها محبا فماتت فوجد عليها وجدا شديدا ولقي عليها أسفا حتى خلا في بيت وغلق على نفسه واحتجب من الناس فلم يكن يدخل عليه أحد وإن امرأة سمعت به فجاءته فقالت إن لي إليه حاجة أستفتيه فيها ليس يجزيني فيها إلا مشافهته فذهب الناس ولزمت بابه وقالت ما لي منه بد فقال له قائل إن هاهنا امرأة أرادت أن تستفتيك وقالت إن أردت إلا مشافهته وقد ذهب الناس وهي لا تفارق الباب فقال ائذنوا لها فدخلت عليه فقالت إني جئتك أستفتيك في أمر قال وما هو قالت إني استعرت من جارة لي حليا فكنت ألبسه وأعيره زمانا ثم إنهم أرسلوا إلي فيه أفأؤديه إليهم فقال نعم والله فقالت إنه قد مكث عندي زمانا فقال ذلك أحق لردك إياه إليهم حين أعاروكيه زمانا فقالت أي يرحمك الله أفتأسف على ما أعارك الله ثم أخذه منك وهو أحق به منك فأبصر ما كان فيه ونفعه الله بقولها
