Sahl bin Saad reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the tribe of Amr bin Awf to make peace between them, and the time for prayer arrived. The one who called the prayer came to Abu Bakr Siddiq and asked, "Shall I call the people to line up so you can lead them in prayer?"Abu Bakr replied, "Yes."So Abu Bakr led the prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived while the people were still praying, and he made his way through until he stood in the row. The people began to clap. Now Abu Bakr never turned his head during prayer, but when the clapping grew loud he did turn, and he saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ signaled to him to stay where he was. Abu Bakr raised his hands and praised Allah for what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had instructed him, then he stepped back until he was even with the row, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ moved forward and led the prayer. When he had finished, he said, "Abu Bakr, what kept you from staying in place when I told you to?"Abu Bakr answered, "It is not for the son of Abu Quhafa to lead the prayer in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Why did I see you all clapping so much? If something arises during a man's prayer, let him say 'Subhan Allah,' for when he says it, attention will be turned to him. Clapping is only for women."
