I entered the masjid of Damascus, and there was a young man with gleaming front teeth, and the people were gathered around him. Whenever they disagreed about something they referred it to him and accepted his judgment. I asked about him and was told, "This is Muaz bin Jabal."The next day I set out early in the heat, but I found that he had come out even earlier than I had, and I found him praying. I waited until he finished his prayer, then I came around and faced him and greeted him. Then I said, "By Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah."Muaz asked, "For Allah?"I said, "For Allah."He asked again, "For Allah?"I said, "For Allah."He asked once more, "For Allah?"I said, "For Allah."Then he took hold of the folds of my cloak, drew me toward him, and said, "Rejoice, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say that Allah said, 'My love is assured for those who love one another for My sake, who sit together for My sake, who visit one another for My sake, and who give freely to one another for My sake.'"He also narrated to me from Malik that word reached him from Abdullah bin Abbas, who used to say, "Moderation, calm deliberation, and a fine bearing are one part of twenty-five parts of prophethood."
