Umar bin Khattab set out for Syria, and when he reached Sargh he received word that plague had broken out in Syria. Abdul-Rahman bin Awf then informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said, "If you hear that it has appeared in a land, do not go there, and if it breaks out in a land where you already are, do not flee from it." So Umar bin Khattab turned back from Sargh.He also narrated to me from Malik, from Ibn Shihab, from Salim bin Abdullah, that Umar bin Khattab turned back with the people from Sargh solely on account of the report of Abdul-Rahman bin Awf.
و حدثني عن مالك عن ابن شهاب
أن عمر بن الخطاب خرج إلى الشام فلما جاء سرغ بلغه أن الوبأ قد وقع بالشام فأخبره عبد الرحمن بن عوف أن رسول الله ﷺ قال إذا سمعتم به بأرض فلا تقدموا عليه وإذا وقع بأرض وأنتم بها فلا تخرجوا فرارا منه فرجع عمر بن الخطاب من سرغ و حدثني عن مالك عن ابن شهاب عن سالم بن عبد الله أن عمر بن الخطاب إنما رجع بالناس من سرغ عن حديث عبد الرحمن بن عوف
