Umar bin Khattab set out for Syria, and when he reached Sargh he was informed that a plague had broken out in Syria. Abdul-Rahman bin Awf then told him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said, "If you hear that it has struck a land, do not go toward it, and if it breaks out in a land where you already are, do not leave in flight from it."So Umar bin Khattab turned back from Sargh.
وحدثني عن مالك عن ابن شهاب،
أن عمر بن الخطاب خرج إلى الشام، فلما جاء سرغ، بلغه أن الوباء قد وقع بالشام، فأخبره عبد الرحمن بن عوف: أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: إذا سمعتم به بأرض فلا تقدموا عليه، وإذا وقع بأرض وأنتم بها فلا تخرجوا فرارا منه. فرجع عمر بن الخطاب من سرغ.
