Umar bin Khattab set out for Syria, and when he reached Sargh he was met by the commanders of the armies, Abu Ubayda bin Jarra and his companions, who informed him that plague had broken out in the land of Syria.Ibn Abbas said, Umar bin Khattab then said, "Call the earliest emigrants to me."So I called them, and he consulted them, telling them that plague had broken out in Syria. They disagreed among themselves.Some of them said, "You have set out for a purpose, and we do not think you should turn back from it."Others said, "You have with you the remainder of the people and the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we do not think you should lead them toward this plague."Umar said, "Leave me."Then he said, "Call the Ansar to me."I called them, and he consulted them, but they took the same course as the emigrants and disagreed just as they had.He said, "Leave me."Then he said, "Call the elders of Quraysh who are here, those who emigrated after the conquest."I called them, and not two men among them differed with him. They said, "We think you should take the people back and not lead them toward this plague."So Umar announced to the people, "I shall be riding out in the morning, so be ready."Abu Ubayda said, "Is this flight from the decree of Allah?"Umar replied, "Had anyone else said it, Abu Ubayda! Yes, we flee from the decree of Allah to the decree of Allah. Tell me, if you had camels and you brought them down into a valley with two slopes, one fertile and the other barren, would you not be grazing them by the decree of Allah if you grazed the fertile side, and grazing them by the decree of Allah if you grazed the barren side?"Then Abdul-Rahman bin Awf came, for he had been away attending to some need of his, and he said, "I have knowledge about this. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'If you hear of it in a land, do not go toward it, and if it breaks out in a land where you already are, do not leave in flight from it.'"Ibn Abbas said, Umar then praised Allah and departed.
و حدثني عن مالك عن ابن شهاب عن عبد الحميد بن عبد الرحمن بن زيد بن الخطاب عن عبد الله بن عبد الله بن الحارث بن نوفل
أن عمر بن الخطاب خرج إلى الشام حتى إذا كان بسرغ لقيه أمراء الأجناد أبو عبيدة بن الجراح وأصحابه فأخبروه أن الوبأ قد وقع بأرض الشام قال ابن عباس فقال عمر بن الخطاب ادع لي المهاجرين الأولين فدعاهم فاستشارهم وأخبرهم أن الوبأ قد وقع بالشام فاختلفوا فقال بعضهم قد خرجت لأمر ولا نرى أن ترجع عنه وقال بعضهم معك بقية الناس وأصحاب رسول الله ﷺ ولا نرى أن تقدمهم على هذا الوبإ فقال عمر ارتفعوا عني ثم قال ادع لي الأنصار فدعوتهم فاستشارهم فسلكوا سبيل المهاجرين واختلفوا كاختلافهم فقال ارتفعوا عني ثم قال ادع لي من كان هاهنا من مشيخة قريش من مهاجرة الفتح فدعوتهم فلم يختلف عليه منهم رجلان فقالوا نرى أن ترجع بالناس ولا تقدمهم على هذا الوبإ فنادى عمر في الناس إني مصبح على ظهر فأصبحوا عليه فقال أبو عبيدة أفرارا من قدر الله فقال عمر لو غيرك قالها يا أبا عبيدة نعم نفر من قدر الله إلى قدر الله أرأيت لو كان لك إبل فهبطت واديا له عدوتان إحداهما خصبة والأخرى جدبة أليس إن رعيت الخصبة رعيتها بقدر الله وإن رعيت الجدبة رعيتها بقدر الله فجاء عبد الرحمن بن عوف وكان غائبا في بعض حاجته فقال إن عندي من هذا علما سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول إذا سمعتم به بأرض فلا تقدموا عليه وإذا وقع بأرض وأنتم بها فلا تخرجوا فرارا منه قال فحمد الله عمر ثم انصرف
