Aslam, the freedman of Umar bin Khattab, reported that he visited Abdullah bin Ayyash Makhzumi and saw that he had some date wine with him while they were on the road to Makkah.Aslam said to him, "Umar bin Khattab is fond of this drink."So Abdullah bin Ayyash carried a large cup of it and brought it to Umar bin Khattab and placed it in his hands. Umar raised it toward his mouth, then lifted his head and said, "This is truly a fine drink." He drank some of it and then passed it to a man on his right. When Abdullah turned to leave, Umar bin Khattab called out to him and asked, "Are you the one who says that Makkah is better than Madinah?"Abdullah said, I replied, "It is the sacred precinct of Allah and His place of safety, and His House is in it."Umar said, "I will say nothing about the House of Allah or about His sacred precinct."Then Umar asked again, "Are you the one who says that Makkah is better than Madinah?"Abdullah said, I replied, "It is the sacred precinct of Allah and His place of safety, and His House is in it."Umar said, "I will say nothing about the sacred precinct of Allah or about His House."Then he departed.
