Umar bin Khattab sought counsel about a man who drinks wine, and Ali bin Abu Talib said to him, "We think you should give him eighty lashes, for when he drinks he becomes intoxicated, and when he is intoxicated he raves, and when he raves he slanders," or something to that effect. So Umar set the penalty for wine at eighty lashes.
و حدثني عن مالك
أن عمر بن الخطاب استشار في الخمر يشربها الرجل فقال له علي بن أبي طالب نرى أن تجلده ثمانين فإنه إذا شرب سكر وإذا سكر هذى وإذا هذى افترى أو كما قال فجلد عمر في الخمر ثمانين
