Zubayr bin Awwam bought a slave and set him free. That slave had sons by a free woman. When Zubayr freed him, Zubayr said, "They are my clients."But the patrons of their mother said, "No, they are our clients."So they took the dispute to Uthman bin Affan, and Uthman ruled that the right of patronage over them belonged to Zubayr.

أن الزبير بن العوام اشترى عبدا فأعتقه ولذلك العبد بنون من امرأة حرة فلما أعتقه الزبير قال هم موالي وقال موالي أمهم بل هم موالينا فاختصموا إلى عثمان بن عفان فقضى عثمان للزبير بولائهم
