The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me during the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage, when I was suffering from a severe illness. I said, "Messenger of Allah, my pain has reached the state you see. I am a man of wealth, and I have no heir except one daughter. Shall I give two thirds of my wealth in charity?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No."I said, "Then half?"He said, "No."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A third, and even a third is a great deal. If you leave your heirs wealthy, that is better than leaving them destitute, begging from people. You will never spend anything seeking the pleasure of Allah without being rewarded for it, even the morsel you place in your wife's mouth."I said, "Messenger of Allah, am I to be left behind after my companions?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "You will not be left behind and then do a righteous deed without gaining in rank and elevation by it. Perhaps you will be left behind long enough that peoples will benefit through you and others will be harmed by you. Allah, complete the migration of my companions and do not turn them back on their heels."But poor Saad bin Khawla, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieved for him because he died in Makkah.
حدثني مالك عن ابن شهاب
جاءني رسول الله ﷺ يعودني عام حجة الوداع من وجع اشتد بي فقلت يا رسول الله قد بلغ بي من الوجع ما ترى وأنا ذو مال ولا يرثني إلا ابنة لي أفأتصدق بثلثي مالي قال رسول الله ﷺ لا فقلت فالشطر قال لا ثم قال رسول الله ﷺ الثلث والثلث كثير إنك أن تذر ورثتك أغنياء خير من أن تذرهم عالة يتكففون الناس وإنك لن تنفق نفقة تبتغي بها وجه الله إلا أجرت حتى ما تجعل في في امرأتك قال فقلت يا رسول الله أأخلف بعد أصحابي فقال رسول الله ﷺ إنك لن تخلف فتعمل عملا صالحا إلا ازددت به درجة ورفعة ولعلك أن تخلف حتى ينتفع بك أقوام ويضر بك آخرون اللهم أمض لأصحابي هجرتهم ولا تردهم على أعقابهم لكن البائس سعد بن خولة يرثي له رسول الله ﷺ أن مات بمكة
