A man came to Abdullah bin Umar and said, "Abu Abdul-Rahman, I lent a man a loan and stipulated that he repay me more than what I lent him."Abdullah bin Umar said, "That is riba."The man asked, "Then what do you advise me to do, Abu Abdul-Rahman?"Abdullah replied, "Loans are of three kinds. There is a loan you give seeking the face of Allah, and for that you have the face of Allah. There is a loan you give seeking the goodwill of your companion, and for that you have your companion's goodwill. And there is a loan you give in order to take something foul in exchange for something wholesome, and that is riba."The man asked, "Then what do you advise me to do, Abu Abdul-Rahman?"Abdullah answered, "I think you should tear up the document. If he gives you the same as what you lent him, accept it. If he gives you less than what you lent him and you take it, you will be rewarded. And if he gives you more than what you lent him, willingly and of his own accord, that is his way of thanking you, and you have the reward for the time you granted him."
أن رجلا أتى عبد الله بن عمر، فقال: يا أبا عبد الرحمن، إني أسلفت رجلا سلفا، واشترطت عليه أفضل مما أسلفته. فقال عبد الله بن عمر: فذلك الربا؛ قال: فكيف تأمرني يا أبا عبد الرحمن!؟ فقال عبد الله: السلف على ثلاثة وجوه: سلف تسلفه تريد به وجه الله، فلك وجه الله! وسلف تسلفه تريد به وجه صاحبك، فلك وجه صاحبك، وسلف تسلفه لتأخذ خبيثا بطيب، فذلك الربا؛ قال: فكيف تأمرني يا أبا عبد الرحمن؟ قال: أرى أن تمزق الصحيفة، فإن أعطاك مثل الذي أسلفته فاقبله، وإن أعطاك دون الذي أسلفته فخذته أجرت، وإن أعطاك أفضل مما أسلفته طيبة به نفسه فذلك شكر شكره لك، ولك أجر ما أنظرته.
