Nufay, who was a slave of Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, working under a contract to purchase his freedom, or simply a slave of hers, was married to a free woman, and he divorced her twice. Then he wanted to take her back, so the wives of the Prophet ﷺ instructed him to go to Uthman bin Affan and ask him about it. He met him by the steps, holding Zayd bin Thabit by the hand, and he put the question to the two of them. They both rushed to answer him, saying, "She is forbidden to you. She is forbidden to you."
