We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the year of Hunayn, and when we met the enemy the Muslims were thrown into disarray. I saw one of the polytheists getting the upper hand over one of the Muslims, so I circled around and came at him from behind and struck him with my sword at the tendon of his shoulder. He turned on me and clutched me in a grip so tight that I smelled the scent of death in it, but then death overtook him and he let me go.I met Umar bin Khattab and asked him, "What is wrong with the people?"He replied, "It is the decree of Allah."Then the people came back, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever has killed a man and can produce proof of it may keep his spoils."So I stood up and said, "Who will bear witness for me?" Then I sat down.He said again, "Whoever has killed a man and can produce proof of it may keep his spoils."I stood up and said, "Who will bear witness for me?" Then I sat down.Then he said it a third time, and I stood up.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What is the matter with you, Abu Qatada?"I recounted the whole story to him, and a man from the people said, "He is telling the truth, Messenger of Allah, and the spoils of that slain man are with me. So satisfy him with something in place of them, Messenger of Allah."Abu Bakr said, "No, by Allah, he will not do that. He will not pass over a lion among the lions of Allah who fought for the sake of Allah and His Messenger and hand you his spoils."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He has spoken truly. Give them to him."So he gave them to me, and I sold the coat of mail and with the proceeds bought a walled garden among the Banu Salama. That was the first property I ever acquired in Islam.
حدثني يحيى عن مالك عن يحيى بن سعيد عن عمرو بن كثير بن أفلح عن أبي محمد مولى أبي قتادة
خرجنا مع رسول الله ﷺ عام حنين فلما التقينا كانت للمسلمين جولة قال فرأيت رجلا من المشركين قد علا رجلا من المسلمين قال فاستدرت له حتى أتيته من ورائه فضربته بالسيف على حبل عاتقه فأقبل علي فضمني ضمة وجدت منها ريح الموت ثم أدركه الموت فأرسلني قال فلقيت عمر بن الخطاب فقلت ما بال الناس فقال أمر الله ثم إن الناس رجعوا فقال رسول الله ﷺ من قتل قتيلا له عليه بينة فله سلبه قال فقمت ثم قلت من يشهد لي ثم جلست ثم قال من قتل قتيلا له عليه بينة فله سلبه قال فقمت ثم قلت من يشهد لي ثم جلست ثم قال ذلك الثالثة فقمت فقال رسول الله ﷺ ما لك يا أبا قتادة قال فاقتصصت عليه القصة فقال رجل من القوم صدق يا رسول الله وسلب ذلك القتيل عندي فأرضه عنه يا رسول الله فقال أبو بكر لا هاء الله إذا لا يعمد إلى أسد من أسد الله يقاتل عن الله ورسوله فيعطيك سلبه فقال رسول الله ﷺ صدق فأعطه إياه فأعطانيه فبعت الدرع فاشتريت به مخرفا في بني سلمة فإنه لأول مال تأثلته في الإسلام
