Yahya bin Saeed reported,

Abu Bakr Siddiq sent armies to Syria, and he went out walking alongside Yazid bin Abu Sufyan, who commanded one of the four divisions.They say that Yazid said to Abu Bakr, "Either you ride or I dismount."Abu Bakr replied, "You will not dismount, and I will not ride. I count these steps of mine as being in the way of Allah."Then he said to him, "You will come upon a people who claim they have confined themselves for the sake of Allah. Leave them to what they claim, that they have confined themselves for His sake. And you will come upon a people who have shaved the hair from the middle of their heads. Strike what they have shaved with the sword.I charge you with ten instructions. Kill no woman, no child, and no frail old man. Cut down no fruit-bearing tree. Destroy no inhabited place. Slaughter no sheep or camel except for food. Do not burn bees or drown them. Do not steal from the spoils, and do not turn coward."

عن يحيى بن سعيد

أن أبا بكر الصديق بعث جيوشا إلى الشام فخرج يمشي مع يزيد بن أبي سفيان وكان أمير ربع من تلك الأرباع فزعموا أن يزيد قال لأبي بكر إما أن تركب وإما أن أنزل فقال أبو بكر ما أنت بنازل وما أنا براكب إني أحتسب خطاي هذه في سبيل الله ثم قال له إنك ستجد قوما زعموا أنهم حبسوا أنفسهم لله فذرهم وما زعموا أنهم حبسوا أنفسهم له وستجد قوما فحصوا عن أوساط رءوسهم من الشعر فاضرب ما فحصوا عنه بالسيف وإني موصيك بعشر لا تقتلن امرأة ولا صبيا ولا كبيرا هرما ولا تقطعن شجرا مثمرا ولا تخربن عامرا ولا تعقرن شاة ولا بعيرا إلا لمأكلة ولا تحرقن نحلا ولا تغرقنه ولا تغلل ولا تجبن
