Safina reported that he set out on a voyage in which Uqba bin Amir al-Juhani was also a passenger. When the time for one of the prayers came, we asked him to lead us in prayer, saying to him, "You are the most deserving among us to do so, for you are a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."But he refused, saying, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever leads the people in prayer and performs it correctly, the reward of the prayer is for him and for them. But whoever falls short in any part of it, the burden is upon him and not upon them.'"
حدثنا محرز بن سلمة العدني حدثنا ابن أبي حازم عن عبد الرحمن بن حرملة
أنه خرج في سفينة فيها عقبة بن عامر الجهني فحانت صلاة من الصلوات فأمرناه أن يؤمنا وقلنا له إنك أحقنا بذلك أنت صاحب رسول الله ﷺ فأبى فقال إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول من أم الناس فأصاب فالصلاة له ولهم ومن انتقص من ذلك شيئا فعليه ولا عليهم
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Dawud reported it in the chapter on Salah, section on the comprehensive treatment of leading prayer and its merit, hadith no. 580, from the hadith of Abdul-Rahman bin Harmala through this route. Ibn Khuzayma, Ibn Hibban, Hakim, and Dhahabi graded it sahih, and it has other routes narrated by Bukhari and others.
