Shall I give you a gift?The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us and we said, "We already know how to send peace upon you, but how do we send blessings upon you?"He said, "Say, 'O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bestow favor upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You bestowed favor upon Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.'"
حدثنا علي بن محمد حدثنا وكيع حدثنا شعبة ح و حدثنا محمد بن بشار حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي ومحمد بن جعفر قالا حدثنا شعبة عن الحكم قال سمعت ابن أبي ليلى قال
ألا أهدي لك هدية خرج علينا رسول الله ﷺ فقلنا قد عرفنا السلام عليك فكيف الصلاة عليك قال قولوا اللهم صل على محمد وعلى آل محمد كما صليت على إبراهيم إنك حميد مجيد اللهم بارك على محمد وعلى آل محمد كما باركت على إبراهيم إنك حميد مجيد
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Supplications, chapter on sending blessings upon the Prophet, hadith no. 6357, and Muslim in the Book of Prayer, chapter on sending blessings upon the Prophet after the tashahhud, no. 406, from the hadith of Shubah with this wording. It also has another chain, a fine one, found in Bukhari, hadith no. 3370, in the Book of the Prophets, chapter (10).
